Employer Information

The Diploma and Advanced Diploma in Applications of ICT in Libraries are awards which are accredited throughout the UK. They were developed in partnership with the Scottish Qualifications Authority.

The top-up material available on this website is a unique help to your staff interested in obtaining the qualifications.

It is expected that the initial candidates for the Diploma will be staff who have been through the Building the New Library Network training. However the qualification is of such a relevant nature for public libraries with their increasing role in lifelong learning that staff new to the sector would certainly benefit from the content of the Diploma.

There are several methods of delivering this qualification, with varying levels of in-house involvement.

  • An in-house training programme, drawing on staff expertise and cascade training with a formal supervisor/mentor network for authentication of assignments. This might suit a larger library authority with a large number of candidates. The library authority itself would seek Approved Centre status.
  • A consortium of library authorities, sharing commercial training or shared staff expertise with a formal supervisor/mentor network for authentication of assignments. One authority might take the lead and secure Approved Centre status.
  • A college or private training provider which has its own learning content and tutors, secures Approved Centre status, and works with local authorities to put staff through training and assessment, with the college/training provider also providing internal verification. In this case it will be essential that the college/training provider tutors have relevant experience and knowledge of use of ICT in public libraries.
  • A college or private training provider working in partnership with a library authority/authorities, with the authorities using the top-up learning, cascade training and own mentors and the college/training provider providing internal verification and presenting the candidates for assessment using their Approved Centre status.
