Determining learning goals

Here are some possible areas to look at with the client to determine the learning goals:

General subject area:

What is the general subject area in which the client wishes to undertake the learning?

Eg: the Spanish language.

Slant or specialism:

Is there a particular specialism to this learning? Eg: Spanish for business.

Existing competence of client:

Does the client possess any existing relevant competence in the subject? Eg: the client has picked up a basic knowledge while living in Spain for six months last year.

Future competence as a result of the learning undertaken:

What level does the client wish to be able to reach as a result of the learning? Eg: the client wishes to write business letters to Spanish clients of their company.

Reasons for learning:

Is there a particular work or social reason the client has for wishing to undertake the learning? Eg: the client is soon to take responsibility for their company's Spanish clients
