Thematic approaches to reader development for clients with special needs or with specific language requirements

Thematic lists is the term used to refer to reading suggestions linked or grouped in some way by subject. An example might be the "Reading the Game" collection of football related books for emergent readers. http://www.literacytrust.org.uk/Football/

The interests of this client group may be as generic or as specialised as any other. Thematic lists may be helpful, especially for those clients who wish particular language materials or cultural needs met. Obviously you cannot be expected to have an all-encompassing knowledge of thematic lists. However you should be able to use Internet search techniques to identify and locate appropriate resources. You may have some research to carry out before you can satisfy the reader's request. In this case, the reader should always be kept up to date with progress. You may find you need additional help to identify the material.

When working on recommendations for emergent readers, you need to remember to gauge the level of ability carefully so that you don't offer material which is too easy or challenging. The range of material in Braille is small in proportion to mainstream publishing, so you should not automatically assume that a Braille edition will be available for a particular title. You will probably find that it is difficult to get enough titles in Braille for a range on a particular theme.
