Examples of online resources

Downloadable audio files are another online resource for readers which may be particularly useful for this group. Some of these are only available through library suppliers on a subscription basis.

Audio Books www.audible.co.uk

This audio book website offers a commercial service directly to the public and audio-files can be downloaded to use with MP3 players, PDAs and other devices in a range of formats from their website. The Penguin website also has an e-books section.

Online book discussion groups enable readers to exchange opinions about their reading. Some of these are independent sites: some are discussion boards within other more general sites. Two points to remember here are barriers to use and protecting vulnerable adults.

British Council Reading Groups www.encompassculture.com/readinggroups/

This site has information about books published in the UK and Commonwealth. It helps readers make choices, ones which can be used in a reading group or classroom or complement English Language Teaching. This is useful for libraries who want to use books from other countries' culture with a Reading Group.

A key point to remember is that your client should ideally leave the library with the reading choices which are right for them. They can then continue to engage in a range of reading activities, such as online book discussion groups, from the computers in the library or from home.
