Selecting online resources

There are many good sites which provide online resources but all sites need to be explored before directing readers to them. This is because you must be sure what you are directing younger clients to. Avoid sites with:

  • heavy advertising
  • "plug-ins" which your service can't access
  • content which is inappropriate for younger clients.

There are sites run by local authorities and reputable organisations which offer interactivity, voting, games and chat without problems. This allows younger clients to share views about their reading within a safe environment.

A key point to remember is that your client should ideally leave the library with the reading choices which are right for them. They can then continue to engage in a range of reading activities, such as online book discussion groups, using the computers in the library or from home.
