Introduction

An important role for library staff in reader development is to make an initial identification of client's reading preferences and before using online resources to select stock which meets these needs. You will first of all then carry out a face-to-face interview with the client to identify their current reading preferences, if any.

We use the word "interview" because it is important that the conversation is a structured process. Interview is NOT meant to imply a formal interrogation. In fact, the opposite holds true - the interaction between the member of library staff and the client should remain friendly and relaxed at all times. This means that you must use good communication and interpersonal skills during these conversations with clients.

The interview is a two-way interaction with you taking responsibility for the efficiency of the communication process.
